Music rooms allowing karaoke parties have long been common in Hong Kong. Customs enforces IP criminal violations and its latest Operation Magpie, saw raids in December on 15 Karaoke clubs in various locations in the Kowloon area of the city.
16 sets of karaoke machines used for playing suspected infringing songs, a game console with suspected pirated electronic games, and other AV equipment were all seized. Three men responsible were arrested for breach of the Copyright Ordinance. The usual modus operandi is that music is streamed onto the devices, an in this case, presumably all illegally.
This follows 31 sites raided in July on behalf of the music industry.
