The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a globally recognized English proficiency test for non-native speakers, operated by the British Council, IDP Education, and Cambridge English. In Vietnam, TikTok has removed several channels offering IELTS study tips and resources, following copyright infringement complaints.
Many of these channels were created by Vietnamese TikTok creators to help others prepare for IELTS, a test that plays a crucial role in accessing education and career opportunities. However, TikTok reported that repeat copyright violations led to bans for many accounts.
This situation highlights a tricky balance between protecting intellectual property and ensuring access to educational resources. While official IELTS content is copyright-protected, the broader impact on learners shouldn’t be overlooked. For many, these channels provided accessible study help, especially for those who might not afford formal training.
This comes at a time when the government just issued Decree No. 147/2024/ND-CP in November, which took effect on 25 December. The decree regulates the management, provision, and use of internet services and information in cyberspace including social media platforms like TikTok. It focuses on the swift and transparent removal of sensitive content, such as fake news, illegal material, and other violations.
